Poetry Wednesday: Arymouse

Arymouse, arymouse, fly over my head

Arymouse, arymouse, fly over my head

And you shall ha’ a crust o’ bread

And when I brew and when I bake

You shall ha’ a piece of my wedding cake

Apparently an arymouse is a bat, and I think this odd little poem is from Scotland. I can't remember where I got it from or why I kept it on my memory stick.

Aren't this little poems that linger in our heads for decades interesting. I would guess given the Scottish link you suggest that it may be some sort of Celtic charm - giving bread to arymouses or is it arymice?

I think it's an English folk poem with its roots in Cornwall.

Cute poem! Reminds me of the French "Chauve-souris" for bat (baldmouse!).
The German word for bat "Fledermaus" has something to do with mouse as well, but I don;t know what Fleder means...
